In 1927 Einstein, with the help of Grommer, unsuccessfully tried to derive the uncertainty principle from the vacuum field equations of general relativity. An attempt is here made to evaluate Einstein's early work toward quantum gravity in the context of recent developments in elementary particle physics and cosmology.
