The relative time and space of the theory of special relativity have never actually been proved to exist. While no experiment confirms the constancy of the velocity of the propagation of light, Einstein's transformations of coordinates and time simply assume this is true, and offer no explanation. Investigation of the literature reveals that special relativity is not required to obtain E = mc2, which was obtained before 1905 using classical physics. An alternative explanation of the velocity c of the propagation of light is offered.

Keywords: special relativity, speed of light, Lorentz transformation, space and time, ether, E = mc2
